In June 2023, 92.6 million individuals were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP across the US and DC, with 45.8% being children. These monthly enrollment figures are part of the comprehensive data collected on eligibility and enrollment activities by state Medicaid and CHIP agencies. The report distinguishes child and total program enrollment, emphasizing that the counts include those eligible for comprehensive benefits. It also highlights differences in data sources and methodologies, notably the distinction between point-in-time monthly counts and cumulative yearly figures, offering additional insights for further exploration.
All states, as well as the District of Columbia, submit crucial information on the eligibility and enrollment activity of their Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs every month (CHIP). Indicators for important application, eligibility, and enrollment processes within each state’s Medicaid and CHIP agency are included in these data, which cover a range of topics. You may obtain the entire dataset at Data.Medicare.gov.

Child Enrollment (Medicaid Child + CHIP Enrollment) – Child Enrollment (Medicaid Child + CHIP Enrollment) figures denote the count of children enrolled in the Medicaid program and the total enrollment in separate CHIP programs as of the last day of the reporting period. These figures represent a snapshot of total program enrollment at a specific point in time and do not solely capture newly enrolled individuals during the reporting period. It’s important to note that these figures include only individuals eligible for comprehensive benefits; certain categories, such as emergency Medicaid, family planning-only coverage, and limited benefit dual eligible individuals, are excluded. The definition of a “child” varies from state to state, based on each state’s Medicaid or CHIP state plan, as reported to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Total Medicaid and CHIP Enrollment – Total enrollment figures reflect the total unduplicated count of individuals enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP as of the last day of the reporting period. These figures provide a snapshot of the overall program enrollment and do not solely capture newly enrolled individuals during the reporting period. Similar to child enrollment figures, this count includes only individuals eligible for comprehensive benefits, with certain exceptions outlined in state-specific notes accompanying the tables.
Other Sources of Enrollment Data – CMS gathers Medicaid and CHIP enrollment data from states through various reporting mechanisms, such as the Statistical Enrollment Data System (SEDS) and Medicaid Budget and Expenditure System. It’s important to note that these enrollment data may differ from the data presented in this report due to methodological variances. For instance, the most recent SEDS annual enrollment report indicated CHIP enrollment exceeded 9.6 million. Unlike the point-in-time, monthly enrollment figures featured in this report, the SEDS CHIP enrollment figure represents the cumulative number of individuals enrolled in CHIP throughout the year. For additional details, you can explore the SEDS total and state-specific annual enrollment data on our CHIP Reports and Evaluations page.
